Hmmm, I think that it IS that Philip and his brother were Salem esque witch hunters (keep in mind that this is an altered version of the world… there would have been ACTUAL witch sightings in Connecticut)… in one of the portraits, you see that the boys are playing with a mob behind them, which could have radicalized Philip. He wants to kill the witches due to said radicalization from the past, and the collector will “send him home.” My ultimate theory is that the collector will betray Belos and become the big bad of the show, using the power of the titan (from the witches).
