Long-time Kerbal Space Program devotee. Got fairly deep into the math of orbital mechanics. . (Disregarding the bi-elliptic transfer) it’s much, much easier to throw things out of the solar system from Earth than to dump them into the Sun. In fact the circular orbit distance where it becomes easier to run things up to solar escape velocity than dump them into the Sun is between 4 and 5 solar radii from the sun, well inside the orbit of Mercury.
So yeah. If you can do it sufficiently cheaply, and you’re not going to need the resources in the garbage, throwing it on a solar escape trajectory is fine. There is far, far more than enough space to store all the conceivable garbage humanity could ever create.
That said…if your civilization has the lift capacity for the mayor of a major city to put tens of thousands of tons of garbage in low earth orbit at a moment’s notice, your civilization has the spacefaring capability to have fairly independent interplanetary colonies and sustain populations of millions in space.
Besides, the real use for space dumpsters is clearly to contain evil space witches for up to ten thousand years. ( http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Rita_Repulsa )
